Virginia Wine Tour

While my Partner in Wine is soaking up the Mexican sun and helping orphans this week, I cheated on her just a little bit...

I think I'm in trouble...

Don't worry - I didn't go to any wineries in North Carolina without her. Nope! I spent the weekend in Charlottesville, Virginia. A ladyfriend had arranged for a driver to take us to a few wineries in the area. First stop: Pippin Hill Farm & Vineyards.

Now, the word on the street is that Jennifer Aniston secretly got married at this vineyard. I could see why--set on a hilly landscape, with nothing but grapevines between you and your celebrity husband/babydaddy, AND the wine was delicious...but expensive. For $6, you could pick 4 wines to taste. Not only did you NOT get to keep the glass, they only gave you 1 ounce pours. WHAAAAT? That shiz doesn't fly in North Carolina. After our kid-sized tasting, my friends and I settled on a bottle of rosé to split and enjoyed the view. Their wine selection was great, but I was a little disappointed with the prices, not to mention the fact that Jennifer Aniston was not the one pouring our wine. And in case you're wondering, yes, my friend did "borrow" a wine glass so that I would have a souvenir. I also bought a bottle of the rosé and a red blend to go, so I'm pretty sure that justified our theft.

Pippin Hill's rosé

Next up: Pollak Vineyards. This winery really won me over. For starters, for $7 we got to taste every wine on the list AND we got good-sized pours--no 1 ounce spouts here, my friends. I really enjoyed all of their whites, but each red was better than the last. The prices were reasonable, so I walked out with a bottle of rosé, a Pinot Gris, and Merlot. (You guessed it: half-case discount. We stuck with tradition and split another bottle of rosé here.

After that, our driver/con artist Norm said it was time to go home, so we piled back into our luxury SUV and headed out. 'Twas a lovely short trip to Virginia, even if I was short one Wine Mouth.
